After having selected A few fishes in the births obtained in 2010/2011, I decide to breed two Red melon discus.
I propose to follow in pictures the result of this experiment…

Size approximately 4 cm
This is the time to transfer the fry in a larger aquarium, There are approximately 5 to 6 cm. Good moment for taking few shots!

Good evening,
I have a good group of adults at home. For this mating, I selected 2 fishs placed in a breeding tank of hundred liters.
After turning the water parameters to values suitable for egg development, I let the pair lay a couple of times before they adequately take care of their youngs.
I am careful not to shock the fry by sudden changes of water parameters.
aquarium contours are white to encourage juveniles to "climb" on the back of their parents.
I make sure to maintain good water quality and feed regularly.
I've answer your expectations?

There are not many young, 26 if I'm not mistaken. I have not had much loss (10% at the larval stage I think) This strain is not as prolific as more traditional varieties. But…. I'll work on that side also.
And this is their first babies for them !

I always find something to improve!
I intend to keep a nice shape, si possible « High body ». Improve fish size, make uniform the batch, make females more prolific etc.…
Basically keep the characters that I like and improve those I like least 🙂

Their grow rate is in the right direction, continue like that Yann. It is also very nice to follow their evolution.
On the other hand (I do not see very well) but I have the impression that some of the fishes have little short opercula, it might be interesting to trace your conductivity earlier 😉

Me, which usually take a few notes, (especially in their "first steps in life"); on this batch I couldn't say when I increase the conductivity…
The, It varies between 350 / 380 micro siemens. (water + salts minerals preis). I had install 4 days ago a filtration system + coal to make some tests with my tap water.

If your water is not too bad, It will bring good things (All minerals are not present in the preis or other salts 😉
The use of 100% osmosis water + salt is for me to use as a last resort (if just tap water or nearby sources are too "rotten" and bring too much risk.
Biensur these writings is only my opinion 😉

So I fully agree with you…
It is for that reason I equipped myself with a tap water filtration system to mix it with osmosis water.
Before I mixed osmosis water and tap water, then after a few worries in the larval stage, in my reproductions, I went to the option 100% osmosis + mineral salts.
But with the same reasoning as you, I want to remake go back but taking care to filter my tap water before use it.

Their grow tank is 200 net litres, bare tank.
I change nearly 30% of water every 3 days. It happen to wait for 4 days depending on my availability… but they prefer all three days.

Those fishs have pigeon base genes…
4 generatons ago, a red melon female was cross with a san merah male.
The fry on picture is the result of 2 inbreeding generation. What i was looking for was: grow rate, body shape and the most clear tails fishs.
Here is the result. I think the clear tails gene come from a small part of ghost discus you can find in the old san merah fish.
I did some research, and this is the explanation i can give you… 😉
Now… I have to improve some things on this generation…. I’m trying to outcross it with an other lineage…
But hard job for me… I’m a hobbist breeder!

My fish are mainly fed with pellets. However, a amount of Lyophilised plankton, home made food is regularly added to their diet… But in very small quantity! 😉
If the aquarium is 'loaded' the rhythm of changes of water remains the same (more or less) but the proportions are larger.
